Obituary
Davis Elry Hopkins, 86, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 7th, at Methodist Central Hospital, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
SERVICES: A joint memorial service is scheduled for Davis and Mary Lou Hopkins on Saturday, June 28th, at 10 am at Westfork Presbyterian church in Grand Prairie.
MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219.
Davis was born January 1st, 1928, in Richland Springs Texas to B.A. and Fannie Burleson Hopkins, the youngest of nine children. He graduated from Richland Springs High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the 88th Infantry division in Livorno and Cortina, Italy, and Bamberg, Germany. After receiving his honorable discharge he attended San Angelo Junior College, graduating in 1951. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SMU/Arlington State College in 1969. He married the love of his life Mary Lou Garrett of Paint Rock, Texas on December 8th, 1951 and they resided together in Grand Prairie for 62 years where they raised two children, Ronnie and Dee Ann Williams.
Davis was employed for over 40 years at Vought Aerospace as a shop liaison and tool project engineer, retiring in 1992. He was active in many civic organizations, serving on the Grand Prairie Planning and Zoning Commission and in 1975 was elected to the Grand Prairie City council. He loved spending time with family and friends and was active in Freemasonry, serving as Worshipful Master of Sam R. Hamilton Lodge in 1981. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the Shrine and volunteered with Grand Prairie DeMolay chapter and the Order of Rainbow for Girls. He served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 196 for many years and led the troop in civic beautification projects. He and Mary Lou volunteered at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and were members of West Fork Presbyterian Church. They also volunteered for many years at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery and the Grand Prairie Tourist Information Center. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, wife Mary Lou, and daughter Dee Ann Williams.
Davis Hopkins exemplified all the virtues of Freemasonry. He always maintained a cheerful and optimistic outlook and brought warmth and light to all who knew him. The good works that he did for his community, family, and friends will endure. He will be greatly missed.
SURVIVORS: Son, Ronald Hopkins of Redondo Beach, CA, brother and sister-in-law, Coy and Tanis Garrett of Colleyville, son-in-law Terry Williams of Grand Prairie, and many nieces and nephews. A special note of thanks goes to Marie and Ralph Gardner for their loving support and care. The family also wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Texas Oncology and Methodist Hospital for their excellent care and great compassion.

Sorry to hear that Davis has passed, the very best to all of the families. I did know Davis and would see him at work. I graduated from Richland Springs in 1952, he was a little ahead of me. Back then I knew just about every one in the area. The very best to all,

Ronald and family, our hearts are heavy with sadness at this news! Your mom and dad became very good friends and we’ve stayed in touch since their trip to Georgia in early 2000. Davis sent me pictures of the family at Easter. Our prayers are with you!
