Horton, William E.
Obituary
William Edward Horton
Passed away on July 17, 2014, at age 96. He was born in St. Louis on September 29, 1917, to Edward J. Horton and Metha Lockerbie. He was gifted with an outgoing, dramatic, and inquisitive personality. Growing up in Rochester, NY, he was president of his senior class and won a scholarship to Harvard College, where he earned a BA in 1939 and an MBA in 1941. A veteran of WWII, Bill served in the US Navy from 1941 to 1945. He loved his country and was a true patriot. He retired as a commander after 17 years in the Navy Reserve. In 1954 he moved with his family to Dallas where he pursued a manufacturing career, serving as president of Roney, Inc. and Thomas Beckett Co., and as a VP for Hydrometals. Bill was always an active member of the Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday school and serving as an elder and a deacon. He volunteered well into his 80s at North Dallas Shared Ministries, where he also served on the Board. He could sing and dance and tell jokes like nobody else, and often did! He loved entertaining and family gatherings. Among his other passions were golf, which he played regularly at Northwood Club, collecting and repairing antique clocks, travel, and family history. Bill was a true intellectual who loved his life and lived it well. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Cooper Horton; his sister Helen McNall of Denver, CO; and his sister Carol Brookman of North Carolina. He is survived by his three children, daughter Barbara and Skip Vaughan of Houston, son Edward and Cindy Horton of San Antonio, daughter Debbie and David Self of Dallas, stepson Doak Boettiger and Patty Woodrich of Dallas, as well as eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. We will miss him.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday July 21, 2014 at Highland Springs 8000 Frankford, Dallas, TX 75252.
