VandenBelt, Ben H.

Ben H. VandenBelt Jr was born August 31, 1924 at home in Bad Axe, Michigan.  He was the son of Ben VandenBelt and Florence Wyse.  He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1942.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Michigan.  In 1948 he married his High School sweetheart Doris Jedele.  They were married for 64 years.  Ben is survived by two children, Kathryn Collar of Plano, Texas and Garret VandenBelt of Spring, Texas.  He was preceded in death by his youngest son Peter VandenBelt and his wife Doris who died in 2012.  Ben and Doris adored their ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren!

Ben served in the Army for both World War II and the Korean War.  He worked for the Ford Motor Company his entire career, working at the company’s World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan and in Sao Paulo, Brazil for three years.  Ben retired in 1981 as Assistant Treasurer at Ford.  Following his retirement from Ford, Ben taught finance classes at the University of Texas – Austin and served as a Director on the Board of Budget Rent a Car.  He and Doris retired to Austin, Texas where they spent 30 years living in Lakeway, The Heritage, and The Conservatory.  In 2012, they relocated to Plano, Texas to be closer to their daughter.  Ben lived at Prestonwood Court.

Ben was active in various Episcopal churches serving as a Lay Reader and Sunday school teacher.  He and Doris were deeply committed to the Bay View Association in Michigan, where the VandenBelt family owned a cottage for over 58 years.  Ben served as the Bay View Association President from 1985 to 1989.  He enjoyed reading and doing home  projects and had a passion for trains and Boxer dogs!  He and Doris traveled extensively and especially enjoyed taking cruises.  Since 2012, Ben was a member of Christ Church Plano.  Ben accomplished much in his lifetime but was truly a gentle, humble man.  He cared about others and was a role model to his family and friends….he will be missed by many.  A memorial celebrating his life will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Christ Church Plano, 4550 Legacy Drive, Plano, Texas 75024.

I was a friend primarily to Doris. We were in the same sewing circle. But I met Ben many times and he was the sweetest guy. I was so sorry to see his obituary yesterday. My sincere condolences to his remaining family. Wreatha Leonard
