Obituary
Philip Cochran Tully, 91, died Sunday, Sept. 28 in Carrollton.
Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2014 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd in Amarillo.
Philip was born January 11, 1923 in Grand Island Nebraska, the fourth of five children to Marian and Charles Franklin Tully. He received his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. He married Helen Faye Raymond on June 16, 1945 following graduation from Iowa State. He served as a 1st Lieutenant US Army in occupied Japan following WWII. He received his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburg and his doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1964.
The family moved to Amarillo in the summer of 1964 where Phil went to work for the Department of Interior Helium Operations. In 1991, Phil received the Meritorious Service Award, the second highest honor bestowed by the Department of Interior. He retired from helium in 1993 at the age of 70.
Phil was a lifetime member of the Amarillo Southwest Rotary Club, Theta Xi fraternity, Sigma Xi Science fraternity, the American Chemical Society, and a member of the Christian Science Church of Amarillo.
He loved family, music, teaching, bridge, skiing, and the Tully cabin he built in Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Alice, his brothers Chuck, Alan, and Gordon.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Carrollton, son David and daughter-in-law Mary of Huntsville Al, son Chris and daughter-in-law Deborah of Borger, daughter Kim Valentine and son-in-law Forrest Jones of Plano, and daughter Tara Moyer and son-in-law Jay of Carrollton, 4 grandchildren Jason Tully of South Fork Co, Lauren Dickson of Borger, William Tully of Huntsville Al, April Valentine of Amarillo and 8 great grandchildren.
