March 15, 1917 - December 7, 2014
Sverre Robert (Bob) Benum, 97, passed peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at his home in Plano, Texas with his daughters, Linda and Michele and granddaughter Koree by his side.
PRECEDED IN DEATH in July 2012 by Geraldine Husk Benum, his wife of 65 years.
SURVIVED BY: Daughter Linda Benum-Pond and her husband Jim; Daughter Michele Benum Sparks and her husband John; four grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, sister Esther Benson, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Born in Quebec, Canada his family moved to Oregon when Bob was a child. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest where he became a logger, owned and ran a saw mill and was a partner in a rendering plant in Seattle. He retired at the age of 60 and taught himself the game of golf. Bob loved playing golf several times a week until his eyesight began failing him at the age of 87. Over those years Bob improved to a five handicap, winning several club championships and recording 11 verified “Hole in Ones”.
Bob was the most interesting man anyone would ever know. Anything he did, he did with gusto and perfection. And he was brilliant. . .in fact, he was a genius. He was a frugal man, he was a generous man. He was a man of few written words yet he told wonderful stories. Stories about life growing up in Spanaway, riding his horse across what is now Fort Lewis. Walking the then wilderness, carrying his 22 rifle with him everywhere. His life was a storybook, filled with exciting stories about logging in the Pacific Northwest, always challenging himself to learn, perfect and win. He competed with others as well as himself. In the saw mill he challenged himself to a competition of cutting logs, how many more can I do in a day. He was a man of passions and full-on efforts. He was a great man.
The family is planning a celebration of Bob’s life in March 2015, to be held in Spanaway, Washington, where he grew up. A small family remembrance will be held January 3, 2015 in Plano, Texas.
