Rivera vda Gonzalez, Carmen L.
Obituary
Carmen Lydia Rivera vda. Gonzalez (Mama Carmen) died on December 8, 2014 in Richardson, Texas. She was 94 years old.
Mama Carmen was born on January 10, 1920 in Adjuntas, a very small town in Puerto Rico, to Julian and Olimpia Rivera. In 1937, at age 17, she married Ismael Gonzalez (age 19) and they had four children. They moved to Ponce, a larger city in Puerto Rico, and then to Bayamon, in the Metropolitan area of San Juan. They consistently looked for better opportunities for their children, while Ismael drove a truck and Mama Carmen was a homemaker.
In 1968, when she was 48, Mama Carmen became a widow. From then on, she lived by herself and became very active learning and practicing various crafts such as crochet, macramé, pottery, sewing, embroidery, and others. She received awards and public recognition for her talent that inspired creativity and dedication to those whom she taught in her home. She had a passion for handmade treasures and for gardening a variety of orchids and other flowers.
In 2007, she moved to the Dallas area to be closer to three of her children. In 2008, she moved into The Plaza at Richardson Nursing Home where she was well cared for. Our family is grateful for all the love and support she received at The Plaza, especially that of her nurses and assistant nurses: Beth, Stella, Ruth, Marvel, Marketa, Uma and so many others. Our gratitude also goes to Lillian, the Music Therapist, who was playing music as she was passing.
Mama Carmen is survived by her children Myrta, Hector, Tere, Alyn, Ismael and Robert, eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Father Juan Carlos Marin will officiate a funeral mass on December 19, 2014 at 1:30 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richardson, Texas. All are welcome to attend to celebrate her life. There will be a small reception following the mass.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to: Alzheimer Association, Dallas Chapter or to the charity of your choice.
