Stegall, Lisa A.
Obituary
Lisa Anne Stegall, 57, of Dallas, Texas passed away January 17, 2015, surrounded by family and friends. She was a remarkable woman who touched and enriched the lives of countless people with her kindness, humor and strength. Lisa was many things: a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, an avid traveler, a creative photographer, a successful attorney, a world champion skeet shooter, an avid bicyclist, and a first-class fashionista. She was the ultimate “people person.” Although her life was cut far too short, she lived more than many people would in two lifetimes, and those who shared her life were made immensely better by knowing her.
She is survived by her husband, David Coody, son Michael Coody, daughter-in-law, Kelly Coody, and two beautiful grandchildren. She is also survived by her parents, Roy and Jo Stegall, her sister, Susan Stegall Eve and numerous family members in Texas, Oklahoma, and Georgia.
Lisa was born in Houston, Texas, but grew up in the Dallas area with her sister and brother, the late Mark Stegall. Lisa graduated from W.T. White High school in 1975 and Trinity University in 1979. At Trinity, she was an active member of the sorority Chi Beta Epsilon, and learned to shoot skeet, winning a world championship in 1979. Lisa attended SMU School of Law, becoming an attorney in 1985. She actively practiced law in Dallas since then. She developed a specialty in employment law, and since 2001 she was a senior attorney for U.S. Postal Service. Lisa always found it ironic that she ended up working for the Postal Service given that her paternal grandfather was a postmaster in Louisiana for many years.
In 1991, Lisa married fellow lawyer, David Coody. She was thrilled to
become the step-mother of Michael Coody, and she considered this to be
the dream “package deal” – one that brought her much happiness. During their marriage, Lisa was happiest when traveling to numerous places near and far in North America, Europe, Thailand, Argentina and the Caribbean. In 2006, Lisa and David welcomed Kelly as a daughter-in-law. The subsequent arrival of two perfect grandchildren brought her unmatched joy. She thoroughly loved being “Grandma Sisa.”
In recent years, Lisa became a cycling enthusiast, and inspired by her brother Mark’s death from diabetes became involved in raising money to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) through charity bike rides. She trained vigorously, and in 2012 rode her bike around Lake Tahoe (72 miles), and then many other charity rides after that. It was after completing a grueling 65-mile JDRF ride in Nashville in 2013, that Lisa discovered that she had cholangiocarcinoma, bile duct cancer. Despite fighting with every fiber of her body and will, and with the support of an army of family and friends, the cancer could not be overcome.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 24th, at Northway Christian Church, 7202 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, Texas. Lisa was such a caring person, never meeting a stranger, that she would want her passing to be used to help others. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation at cholangiocarcinoma.org or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at JDRF.org.

Loving you now and always Lisa! Say hi to Mark for us and the two of you enjoy those perfect powder runs in the sky!
What an incredible life Lisa made for herself. She touched the lives of so many and will be greatly missed. Prayers to her family.
Lisa was one of the kindest women and attorneys I have ever had the pleasure of working with. As a newly minted lawyer working for the Postal Service, Lisa always lended welcomed and helpful advice and leadership as I embarked upon my new career as an attorney. She will always be rememered for being a skilled lawyer and kind soul.
I am so very glad that I was able to see Lisa in San Antonio in October. I am so sorry for your loss. I looked into attending the memorial service but the distance of 300 miles across Texas is just too much for me by myself. I will be thinking of you this Saturday afternoon, and always. I am so happy I got to know Lisa. ~Jane Polk Sinski, Kerrville, Texas
Thoughts and prayers.
I am a member of the cholangiocarcinoma.org discussion boards that Lisa participated in. She was loving and caring about the members of this site. Her compassion and understanding will be missed.
Will always love you, Lisa.
Lisa had the amazing ability to bring people together who would ordinarily never have met. She introduced me to at least two very special people and I am so grateful. This gift of hers is just one of the things I appreciated about this wonderful lady.
I am truly in shock. Lisa and I spent some very fun times back in high school that I will never forget. With love from your old friend Lisa, I will miss you so very much. Wade
No words can truly convey the sadness for Lisa’s loss and sympathy and empathy I have for those left behind. She was a blessing while here and will be welcomed by wonderful people in heaven.
I knew Lisa only from the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation discussion boards. Her comments on the boards helped us all navigate the minefields of this awful disease. She was an amazing woman and will be missed.
I knew Lisa during her skeet shooting days and developed an appreciation of her as a wonderful person as well as a fine a shooter. The news of her death saddens me greatly. My condolences to her family for their loss. Lisa will be missed.
I also knew Lisa through the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation Board. She was a kind and caring person, supporting others while dealing with this illness herself. She will be greatly missed.
I had the pleasure of riding with Lisa at a joint JDRF / ADA training ride a couple of years ago.
Lisa was one of those people you instantly wish you had known longer.
The good ones go way too soon… 🙁
God bless, Lisa. You will be missed by all who knew you.
