Orchard, Elizabeth "Betty"
Obituary
Elizabeth “Betty” Bartlett Garrett Olmsted Orchard died on January 17, 2015 at 92 in Dallas, TX of Alzheimer’s disease. Born Jan. 31, 1922 in St. Louis MO to Mary Elizabeth Tilson and John McClure Garrett, she lived a very full life.
She was raised in part and influenced greatly by her great grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Ferguson. Through divorce, she thought herself lucky to have two sets of parents and the experience of living in both Poughkeepsie and Tucson.
Betty’s interest in drama grew at Arlington HS and flourished at Vassar College. After graduation, Betty married RCAF pilot Charles Olmsted. Widowed too soon at 21, she ventured to NYC to become an editor and model for Conde Nast’s Vogue and Glamour magazines. In 1951, she married Joseph Thomas Orchard then moved to Texarkana to raise children and pecans while following her husband through multiple adventures, and ultimately to Dallas, TX in 1965.
There she volunteered and worked as a librarian at St. Michaels, The Hockaday School and the Dallas Public Library. Her pleasure was the Tuesday Sewing Club where she and her other interesting pals visited and thought about sewing. Betty was always a lady and beautiful to the end.
She is survived by her children Tony, Jon, Joe Jr. and Liza; her grandchildren Amanda and Eden; and great-grandson Max.
Services will be held January 31, 11 a.m. Saturday at Michael and All Angels Chapel, 8011 Douglas, Dallas, TX 75225.
