Joe was one of my best friends. We worked out together at 24hour fitness for the past year or two. He was a caring, reliable, and fun person. He will be missed greatly by me (and many others.)
Joe was my husband Jeff’s best friend since kindergarten. They started off as young boys that hung out in backyard forts, to fishing in the lakes of Middleburg Hts., Ohio to baseball, basketball, dating, proms-everything young happy boys grow up doing! We went to Joe’s 21st birthday dinner at the very exclusive Tangiers restaurant to celebrate, joe took a really nice girl from Akron University and the 4 of us had such a great night of food, laughing and just such fun! That’s when I knew why Jeff and Joey were such great buddies, he could just make you laugh and he had such a good sense of humor! When Joe graduated from Akron Unjversity he wanted to live out in California and he did just that! Jeff went and visited Joe a few times before we settled down and got married in 1986. Joey flew in from California to be in our wedding and as Jeff and I were kneeling at the altar, Jeff’s left shoe said “Help” and his right shoe said “Me” This was down to our surprise and to everyone in the church we read it! Joe was quite the comedian and we laughed all the time from things he did! We went to Las Vegas with Joey and he traveled to Ohio every year at least once or twice to stay with us and see our beloved Cleveland Browns play. Joe was with us this past September for a week and came back in November for 4 days- Jeff and Joe and I were so happy because we won that game!!! Jeff and Joe lived for those Browns games! Our 2 daughters absolutely grew up to love Joe and every time he came to visit they were so happy to see him. He would ALWAYS have gifts for them- stuffed animals, Browns hats, T-shirts, and always bought cat nip and cat treats for our 2 cats. Jeff and are are deeply saddened- Jeff and Joe had a 48 year friendship that was more like brothers. Jeff told me that going to the Browns games will never be the same again. They would call each other during and after the games and re hash everything! Joe’s mother and father were a big part of Jeff’s life growing up, and Jeff flew out to see Joe and his mom in California a few months before she passed away. Joe was so thankful that Jeff came to see Mary. Joe talked to me at length on the phone when my dad passed in 1998. He knew how I felt because his dad passed in 1988. We are so THANKFUL for having Joe in our lives and we are heartbroken that he is gone. Goodbye dear Joe, we will see you again one day! RIP and may God bless your soul- all our love to you Joe. Our deepest sympathary to Mary and Bob and their 2 daughters. Jeff Prochko will never be quite the same without Joe.
Mary,
I am so saddened by the news of Joey’s passing. I hope you remember who I am.(Joey nicknamed me Tucker and it stuck till high school) Joey, Chris Szabo and my self used to hang out all the time. Joey was one of my first friends when I moved into Indian Creek as a third grader. I think the three of us all got along because we where the three smallest kids in our grade. When I heard about his passing, so many great memories of my youth came flooding into my head and heart. Many of these things I hadn’t thought of in over 35 years. I thought I would share some of the things I remember most about my times growing up with Joey.
First, it has to be the overnights we would have at your house on Cherokee. We would stay in that big ‘dog house’ (shed) in your back yard. We would sneak out around 2 in the morning and wonder the neighborhood or meet up with other kids (girls as we got older haha) who where ‘camping’ out also.
Another great memory, is all the fishing we would do. We would ride our bikes to Wallace lake. Leave early in the morning, pack a lunch and come back at supper time. (burned to a crisp) We would also ride over to the pond by High 71 and Bagley. We would park our bikes at the tunnel that went under 71 and walk through the tunnel, straddling the water to get to the pond. We had to be very careful, because there was an old man who used to watch over the pond and try shooting us with salt pellets.
Joey and your Dad brought me to my first Browns game at the old stadium. It was a Monday night game and the Browns where huge underdogs (some things never change). We won that game and I’ve been a huge Browns fan ever since. Even have season tickets now. After I joined wrestling in 10th grade, Joey and I began to go our separate ways. I will always remember our great friendship and the many great memories I have of him growing up in Indian Creek.
Rest in Peace, Joey. Looking forward to seeing you again someday, my friend.
Joe was my best friend, I met Joe at the gym in Oceanside California . I had the opportunity to have Joe at my house last summer for 2 months. Joe as he put that “we were cut out of the same cloth our love for sports, girls, working out and partying. We are also both clean freaks, I loved him dearly and we takes about him coming back or I had considered selling my home to be close to my best friend. I’ll miss him so much. We did take the opportunity to visit his Mother and Fathers grave.I never met his fatther but knew his Mom well, Joe and I would take her to the horse trac 2 times a year at Del Mar.
