September 2, 1937 - March 28, 2015
Gwendolyn Geraldine King Russell, a long-time resident of Odessa, TX, passed peacefully on March 28, 2015, at Silverado Memory Care in Dallas, Texas. Born on September 2, 1937, to the late Ryan and Christine King in Jessup, GA, Gwen had a boundless passion for education, teaching, and children. In 1963, she graduated from the University of Houston with a BA in Education, and for the next 22 years, she taught elementary school. Gwen and Delwyn Russell, her husband of 40 years, founded Russ Chemical Co., an Odessa manufacturing facility, in 1969; she managed the facility for 20 years after retiring from teaching. Gwen also had a passion for dancing. She was a founder of the Odessa Swing Dance Club and was instrumental in the development of West Coast Swing nationwide. Gwen is predeceased by her parents, Ryan and Christine; her sisters Ouida, Ruby, Edith, Dott, Effie, and Lilouise; her brothers Richard, Caleb, Gene, and Donald; and her beloved daughter Rita Lorraine Webb. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Faustino Garza; the joys of her life, her grandchildren Jared Garza and his wife Shelly, Jason Garza and his wife Julia, Chad Muncy, and Raina Webb; the delights of her life, her great-grandchildren Jacob, Joshua, Maria, Elijah, Caleb, Graciela, and Nicholas Garza; her sister Reba Hill; and her numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
