Plan Ahead

Young, Cary

December 2, 1933 –

Obituary

Cary Young of Plano, Texas, died on April 23, 2015. He was born in Port Arthur, Texas on December 2, 1933 to Sherman and Gladys Carpenter Young.

He attended public schools in Port Arthur and graduated from Stephen F. Austin H.S. as valedictorian of his class in 1951. He attended the University of Texas where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in 1955, and the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1956.

After graduation from law school, Mr. Young practiced law briefly in Port Arthur, and after three years as an international petroleum lawyer, he returned to Port Arthur in 1962 as City Attorney. In 1966 he became City Attorney of Garland, and left that post in 1969 to resume his career in international petroleum law in Houston; Bogota, Columbia; and Dallas. He retired at the end of 1991 from Oryx Energy Company, and in 1992 began a private legal and consulting practice, handling petroleum-related matters in the former Soviet Union republics of Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.  He retired definitively after leaving Georgia in November 2003 on the Saturday before Eduard Shevardnadze’s resignation as president.

Mr. Young was a lifelong seeker of truth and the perfect chicken fried steak, and an avid reader and student of languages and history. He enjoyed classical music, classic and satirical comedies, and medicinal red wine. He was affiliated with North Texas Mensa for the last 30 years. He loved the law, but was dismayed at the low state to which the profession has fallen. By the same token, he was raised in the shadow of a Southern Baptist church, and was also saddened by the politicization of that organization. He had no use for bigotry in any form, intellectual dishonesty, political correctness, the culture of entitlement and the greed of corporate executives.

His philosophy was best expressed by the character Manny Yokum in the bygone comic strip Li’l Abner, written and drawn by the late Al Capp:  “Good is better than evil, because it’s nicer.”

Mr. Young is survived by his daughters whom he loved unconditionally, Stephanie Louise Young of Plano and Felicia Frances Young Whisenhunt and her husband Ty of Farmers Branch; by his grandsons Fletcher and Fenix Whisenhunt; by his brothers Chester Young of Austin, Joe Young of Port Arthur, and John Young of Brenham, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, by his sister Ruth Young Justice, and by his brothers Pierce Young and Sherman Young, Jr.

Services were at Oak Bluff Cemetery in Port Neches, Texas at 10:00am on Friday, May 1.

I was a colleague of Cary Young with Oryx back in the day. A wonderfully written obituary for an authentic man.

I remember Cary as a wonderful father to his children. He always came around to see Stephanie at work at Oryx Energy and I got an opportunity to meet and be around him. He was a great guy, full of humor and love.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
