Born August 8, 1922 in Dallas, TX. Passed away on September 9, 2015 at the age of 93. Mr. Tanner is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marie Tanner; his four children and respective spouses, Celia Magee and husband Walter of Plano, TX, Allan Tanner and wife Vicki (deceased) of Houston, TX, Adele Tanner Demler of Dallas, TX, Carrie Tanner and husband Gordon Robb of St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies; grandchildren, Brandon Magee and wife Michelle of Plano, TX, Lance Demler of Frisco, TX, Philip Magee and wife Kristen of Frisco, TX, Justin Collett and wife Serena of Chicago, IL, Lark Demler of Dallas, TX, Todd Tanner and wife Jay of Glendale, CA, and Tara Tanner (deceased). He graduated from Crozier Tech in Dallas, TX in 1940. He served with honor in the Army Air Corps/Air Force in the China Burma India Theater (CBI) where he rose to the rank of Captain and was a highly decorated combat pilot in the prestigious Flying Tigers flying P-40’s and P-5I’s. He was re-called to action in the Korean War where he once again served with honor. His courageous actions during military duty earned him these medals: Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart and Air Medal amongst others. Upon returning from WWII he graduated from Southern Methodist University. Vernon was known and loved by all as someone with unconditional love, a doting grandfather, sportsman, lover of the outdoors and animals. He took his children and grandchildren on many fishing and camping trips that inevitably went comically wrong. He had his own humorous and affectionate nicknames for just about everyone – friends & family alike; Senior, Bau, Junior, Timey, Hops, Chug, Hoppa’s Hoppa, Chuga Muga, Preciouscita, C-Bonet, Sawolka, Toffee, Chili-Bowl, Bada Boo, Tubs, Hoppa’s Boy, Lula Bell, Lulu – and countless others. He created wildly imaginative bedtime stories for his children and grandchildren including The Ghost Ship of Abercrombie and his own version of Lady of the Lake. Family, friends and even friends of children and grandchildren called him ‘Papa’. He loved to travel with his wife, Marie, and took his children, grandchildren and many of their friends on memorable road trips with them. He was adored by family, friends, neighbors and all who met him. A Private Celebration of his Life will be held on October 18 for family and friends. In lieu of flowers please give to the SPCA in memory of Vernon Tanner to honor his two beloved yellow Labs- Badgedog (deceased) and Lucy- and for the respect and kind treatment of all animals. Your sister Edna Mae loved you so much she named me, her first-born daughter, after you. You promptly gave me one of your famous nicknames, Delididy. I shall miss you. Love, Delididy
your friend from the gardens
He was loved by all and a Hero to some. I was one of the lucky few. I look back and cherish every single day that I had with him and will miss him every single day that I am here on this earth until I see him again. A gentlemen, a fighter, an adventurer, a leader, a teacher, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a friend and so much more to so many people. Thank you to everyone that has made his life what it was – A Great Story.
Love you and miss you Hops.
Your Grandonson,
Hops
Uncle Vernon was a real man. When my father, Carl, became very ill, he was there for him. As the first of 11 siblings to pass away, Uncle Vernon comforted his younger brother in his suffering in ways that only an unselfish, caring “hero” would do. God Bless Uncle Vernon!
We are so sorry for the loss of such a kind and loving man. His love and legacy will continue to grow and live on in his four children and countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We wish the entire Tanner family strength and love during this difficult time. Special hugs to Vernon’s devoted wife Marie, his loving daughter Carrie and adoring grandson Justin.
With love from New York

What a beautiful man. Nothing more to say except how stupendous he served his country with honors.
I know Cliff was anxiously awaiting at the pearly gates with open arms to celebrate “LIFE”!!!.
We are proud to have had him as our uncle.
Rest in Peace Uncle Vernon. You are an inspiration to us all passing through this earth and will be greatly missed.
Love,
Joy, Darrell, Cheryl, Christi, and Kyle.
Uncle Vernon you will be forever remembered in our hearts. You were a fine man and served honorable in WWII with the metals you received. This is stupendous, to say the least. Cliff was always proud of you and I know he was anxiously awaiting you arrival at the pearly gates so everyone can go on and rejoice and celebrate life.
We are only passing through and will see you in a better place. I know you are all looking down on us as our guardian angels, especially my Dad Cliff. Fighting crime in the street is not an easy task but it will always be my passion.
Cliff always said: OUTLOOK, ATTITUTE, AND GRATITUDE!!!
AMEN AND GOD BLESS UNCLE VERNON. YOU BEAUTIFUL SMILE ALWAYS LITE UP MY WORLD AND YOU WILL BE MISSED.
