Oxley, A. Winston
Obituary
A. Winston Oxley of Dallas, Texas, died on August 25, 2015, in Carrollton, Texas, after 60 years of a life well lived on his own terms. While he enjoyed a career as a prominent mergers and acquisitions attorney in Dallas, Texas, he remained true to his small-town roots, his lifelong love of cars and motorcycles, and the many friends from diverse walks of life that he made along the way, ranging from his school friends in Oklahoma to his motorcycle-riding companions, his attorney colleagues in Texas and New York law firms, and his clients whom he vigorously represented and protected. Winston was born on July 4, 1955, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, to Acie and Alta Charlene Oxley of Ratliff City, OK. Winston attended Fox High School in Fox, Oklahoma, where he excelled academically and in football. He graduated with a B.A. from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1977 and a J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1980. Winston practiced law in Dallas, Texas, for over 34 years, first as an associate at Gardere & Wynne, then as an associate and shareholder at Johnson & Swanson (later Johnson & Gibbs and Johnson & Wortley), and as a partner at Vinson & Elkins. He retired as a partner from Vinson & Elkins because of illness at the end of 2014. Winston enjoyed motorsports, guns, and history. He particularly loved riding his motorcycles. Never content with the mundane, Winston began true motorcycle adventures at an early age, usually in the company of a group of friends including Bill Gorbett, Mikey Hale and Frank Shebester. He and Bill rode to British Columbia when Winston was only 14. Subsequent years included multiple trips to Colorado and Pennsylvania, and Winston and Mikey celebrated Winston’s 18th birthday in Bend, Oregon, after an impromptu decision to extend what had been planned as a much shorter trip, motivated by Winston’s desire to see the Pacific Ocean. Even as his legal career became extremely demanding, motorcycling remained a priority. A weekend ride could be a run to Colorado. He rode numerous times to Maine and Nova Scotia, traveled the Pacific Coast Highway and North Coast Highway from San Diego to Mt. Hood, and rode solo from Dallas to Denali National Park. He began participating in motorcycle rallies with the Waltz Across Texas in 1998. Later, he became a member of the Iron Butt Association and, in 2009, realized his long-time dream of competing in and completing the Iron Butt Rally (11,000 miles in 11 days) on his red 1994 BMW R1100 RSL. Those who are familiar with Winston’s riding habits believe it likely he logged more than a million motorcycle miles. Winston is survived by his wife, Tamie Cooper Oxley, Dallas, Texas; his mother, Alta Charlene Oxley, Ratliff City, Oklahoma; his first wife, Joyce Slocum, San Antonio, Texas, with whom he maintained a life-long friendship following their divorce; and many other family members and friends, who will dearly miss his unique presence in their lives. He also entrusted to carefully selected individuals, who will appropriately honor both them and his legacy, his eight beloved motorcycles. Winston was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Alton (Shine) and Izetta Stroud; his father, Acie Oxley; his uncles, Ronnie and James Stroud; and his dear friend, Frank Shebester. We thank the doctors and staff at the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center and at VITAS Healthcare for their kind attention to and care for Winston, and we thank George Mitmanski for his many years of maintaining and caring for Winston’s motorcycles. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, September 20, 2015, at Unity of Dallas church, 6525 Forest Lane, Dallas, Texas. Donations in Winston’s memory may be made to Dot’s Closet, 5810 Live Oak Street # 12, Dallas, TX 75214 or the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401 (www.pcf.org).
