Nolte, Sidney D.
Obituary
Sidney D. Nolte, age 87, of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully on Wednesday September 30, 2015 surrounded by his family who he cherished. Sid was born on November 15, 1927 in Jefferson, Iowa to the late Chester Harrison and Macel Nolte. He was a loving husband, father, and friend who will be sorely missed by his adoring family. He greatly valued education graduating from Jefferson High School at the age of 16. He went on to graduate from Simpson College with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1948, interrupted by his service in the United States Navy. He went on to receive his Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1952, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from Iowa State University in 1960. Sid married the love of his life, Virginia Cooper, in 1949 and they went on to have four children. After beginning a career in Education, he moved his family to Dallas, TX in 1963 to begin a 26 year career at Texas Instruments. He loved his work in the Calculator Division and was instrumental in the creation of the hand held calculator. In his retirement he returned to the classroom at the University of Texas at Dallas as a professor of Computer Science. Sid was a 52 year member of the First United Methodist Church of Richardson. He believed that the church was the center of his family life and that “All things work together for good for those that love the Lord”. His faith served as an example to his family the importance of that guiding principle in his life as he volunteered his time for many years to the missions and projects of the church. He was a longtime member of the Pathfinders Sunday School class where he frequently taught. Sid is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia Nolte. He is also survived by his four children, Anne Martin and husband Dennis of Spokane WA, Jane Gonzales and husband David of Frisco, TX, Dan Nolte of Plano TX, and Bill Nolte and wife Betty of Melissa, TX. He was a proud Grandfather to eleven Grandchildren, Phillip and Karen Martin, Brice, Vance, and Lauren Gonzales, Luke, Megan, Danny, Brenna, Bailey, and Brooke Nolte, and three Great Grandchildren. I fondly remember your dad, working on that old VW I had during college. I am thinking about you and your mom.I know he will be missed.

Sid, was a loyal friend, proud of his family and always cared about those around him. I enjoyed his knowledge and his sense of humor.
I worked with Sid at Texas Instruments on several projects, including some very intense proposal efforts. Sid was the kind of man you could always count on. I admired Sid greatly and will miss him.
Sid was a professional colleague of mine at TI from the year he joined, 1963. Not sure whether I ever met his wife, Virginia, but do want her and all the family to know how highly Sid was regarded among his colleagues. I think it would be agreed among all of us that Sid was likely the greatest mathematician of his tenure at Texas Instruments. Even more important, one of the finest of gentlemen.
A great man! Thinking of the family as you celebrate his life.
So very sorry for your loss. The world lost a good man. My condolences to the whole family. A big hug for you Ginnie.
Love Joyce
Ginnie, I’m so sorry for your loss. I know Sid was your world and you will miss him tremendously. I’m sending prayers and hugs.
Love,
Bobbi
I was privileged to work with Sid and his Iowa State cohort, Lura (Buddy) Dean and our leader, Dick Allan, at TI during the 60’s. He was great mathematician and a loyal coworker. I met him again when he was an adjunct at Richland College. I treasure fond memories of late night working on the terrain-following radar simulations.
First worked with Sid at TI in the Advanced Calculator Div. He was a true friend. It was his recommendation that helped me join faculty at UTD. I can never repay him for his kindness. And I will never forget his dry Iowa/downhome wit. He regularly had us holding our sides when he found humor in those crazy engineering/business meetings. His family will be in our prayers.
I am very late to this page, but Mr. Nolte had a profound impact on my life as a young man. I learned so much from him at UT Dallas, and I see Mr. Cadenhead below too. Thanks to both of you. I eventually did go to work at Texas Instruments as well. I am so saddened by this loss, but I have no doubt there are more like me. Mr. Nolte was a great man.
