Elsa Reyes, aka Tia Eti, was the most loving and generous person I have known. Her spunky nature and bright attitude could bring a smile on anyone’s face. She was a true friend of my mother and someone who was always supportive when needed. She was strong and brilliant as she always stood tall, confident about who she was. Her strength and positive attitude, even in adversity, is something I strive so much to obtain.
In so many ways she was a caring and wonderful person to me. Even when she had very little for herself, she always gave a lot. I remember one birthday she surprised me with a gift. I was not expecting anything, yet she wanted to make me feel special on my birthday. I remember opening it to find something girly and not something I would ever use, but the thought that she wanted to spend her paycheck on a gift for me was something so unselfish and heartfelt. This open and charitable heart of hers was a treasure to rarely ever be seen in other people. A couple years later she even taught me how to dance on my birthday. Ironically, I don’t remember any of it, but I loved that she made the effort to push me out of my boundaries and enjoy myself in new ways. I also remember giving my first acrylic painting to her. It was of the sun and the moon and I was very skeptical about it, but she told me she loved it and hung it up in her apartment. Even now it is still hanging there. My Tia is someone I will always long to see again and I am sure anyone else who has known her feels the same. May she always be remembered as the amazing person she was.
