Obituary
May 8, 1937 — February 18, 2016 Elizabeth Cecile Shapley was born in San Antonio, Texas, on May 8, 1937 to Walter E. and Violet (Smith) Eckermann. She graduated from Edison High School (1955) and Howard Payne University (1959). She began her teaching career in Midland, Texas, where she met Robert Allen Shapley. They married on June 18, 1960, living in Midland and Corpus Christi before relocating to Houston, their home for over fifty years. Bob and Betty were married for 55 years and have 3 children and 8 grandchildren. Together with Bob, Betty attended and was very active at Tallowood Baptist Church, where they loved serving together in numerous ministries at Tallowood, including mission trips to Mexico, Panama, Guatemala and Alaska. She was a dedicated and gifted teacher who invested in the lives of her students. Her love of reading and storytelling led her to pursue her M.S. in Library Science in 1992 and she finished her career as a librarian in Aldine ISD. Betty was a devoted daughter and sister, a faithful and loving wife, a cherished mother and grandmother, and a loyal friend whose life was guided by her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Betty is survived by her husband Bob, daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and James De La Cruz, son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Laird Shapley, and daughter and son-in-law Alicia and Allen Williams, and grandchildren Nathan De La Cruz, Andrew De La Cruz, Jacob De La Cruz, David De La Cruz, Caleb De La Cruz, Abby Williams, Alex Williams and Harrison Shapley. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, March 28th at 10:00 AM at Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Rd. Houston, TX 77024 In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: Tallowood Baptist Church Missions Fund
