Sweeny, John R.

August 29, 1924 - April 2, 2016

John Robert Sweeny went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2016.  John, who was 91, was born August 29, 1924 in Wichita, Kansas.   He grew up on a farm in Scott City, Kansas, and on June 4, 1944, married Faye Shull.  John and Faye made friends wherever they went including John’s varied occupations that included farming, hotel management and vehicle delivery.  After Faye’s death in 1995 John married Elizabeth Polvado in 1996.  Elizabeth passed away in 2013. The two of them were very involved members of Lake Highlands Baptist church.  John served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School and was part of the Welcoming Team.  He would be at the main entrance of the church on Sundays to greet each person with a warm smile and hug.

More recently John loved the people at Garnet Hill, the long-term care facility, and showed his love for music by playing “Name that tune” with staff and guests with songs from his phone.  John’s sweet spirit, positive attitude  and love for the Lord brought joy to his friends and family there.

John is survived by his sister-in-law Norma Sweeny; five children, Craig Sweeny and wife Terry, Janet Denton and husband Hal, Loretta Davis, Sheri Poage and husband Darrell, and by David Polvado and wife Mindy;  grandsons Robert Sweeny, Chris Douglas and wife Melissa, Blake Denton and wife Camille, and Keith Denton and wife Elysse;  granddaughters April Adair, Dawn Bethke and husband Craig, and Julie Williams and husband Keith; and seven great grandchildren.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at Lake Highlands Baptist Church on Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 a.m. http://www.lhbc.com.   In lieu of flowers John requested donations be made to Lake Highlands Baptist Church.

Uncle John will be missed by both of us. He always was full of smiles and couldn’t do enough for us whenever we were around him. If the world had followed his example of being with people there would always be peace. We love you

Grandpa Sweeny, you were the sweetest kindest man. You had a calming way about you. You had the ability to make anyone feel they were the most important person when you talked to them. You were the best grandpa a girl could ask for. You will truly be missed. I love you!!!
