Mary Lou Cozzens of Lewisville, TX, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2016. Memorial services will be held in Capitan, N.M. at the Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 28th.
Mary Lou was born October 8, 1929 in Silver City, N.M. to Hampton Cooper and Jessie Foreman Cooper. She attended public school in Silver City and graduated from Western New Mexico University in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
Following graduation Mary Lou taught elementary school in the Lovington School District. She married L. C. Cozzens in December, 1952. In 1959 the Cozzens family moved to Dora where she stayed at home and raised her four children, occasionally serving as a substitute teacher.
In 1965 Mary Lou moved with her family to Portales where she taught at three different elementary schools over the next twenty three years. She retired in 1988 and she and L. C. moved to Capitan where she continued to substitute for the next several years. For the last 5 years, she has been with her daughter Glenda and family in the Dallas area.
Mary Lou was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Grand Cross of Color, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Capitan Methodist Church. She was involved in Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi and was an advisor of the Portales Chapter of Rainbow for Girls.
Mary Lou is survived by one son, Gary, and wife Shirley Crawford of Nogal, NM; three daughters, Glenda, and husband Jeff Sears of Flower Mound, TX; Gail, and husband Dickie Scott of Olney, TX; and, Grace, and husband Mike Moore of Rio Rancho, NM. She is survived by seven grandchildren, Kristi Flores and her husband Miguel of Roswell, NM; Jack and James Sears of Flower Mound, TX; Sydnee Mowery and her husband Gray of Stephenville, TX; Kodee Scott of Olney, TX; Lauren Weigand and her husband Corey of Phoenix, AZ and Shawn Moore of Rio Rancho, NM as well as two great-grand daughters, Ridley Crawford and Audrianna Flores of Roswell, NM. She is also survived by one brother, Jack Cooper and wife Margaret of Wilton, CT and one sister-in-law, Lee Cooper of Red Bluff, California.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents Hampton and Jessie Cooper, her husband L.C. Cozzens and brothers Hampton Cooper and George Cooper.
