Dr. George Robert Beauchamp November 27, 1942 ~ April 21, 2016
Dr. George Robert Beauchamp passed away the morning of April 21st 2016 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 73 years. George was born on November 27th 1942 in Pontiac, Michigan to the late Dr. George Albert Beauchamp and Kathryn Elizabeth McCarbery Beauchamp. He graduated from New Trier High School in Evanston, Illinois before pursuing his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley and his medical degree at Northwestern Medical School. While serving his country in the United States Army, George continued his education at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he completed his internship and residency. He pursued his fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and corneal surgery in Washington, DC at the Washington Eye Center and Children’s Hospital National Medical Center, under the tutelage of the late Dr. Marshall M. Parks, a lifelong mentor and friend. Throughout his career, which was dedicated to optimizing the potential of every child for whom he cared, Dr. Beauchamp worked both in private practice in Washington, D.C. and in the department of ophthalmology at The Cleveland Clinic. In 1991, he relocated to private practice in Dallas, Texas and would later be joined by his daughter, Dr. Cynthia L. Beauchamp, M.D. Having the opportunity to teach, partner with and change children’s lives in conjunction with his daughter, Cynthia, was one of the greatest joys of his personal and professional life. Dr. Beauchamp was a leader in the field of pediatric ophthalmology, serving as a Director of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He was Chairman of the Ethics Committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was an Ethics Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He served as President and subsequently Chairman of the Board of the Children’s Eye Foundation, a foundation dedicated to ending preventable vision loss in children. He traveled extensively internationally to teach, mentor and perform charitable surgery throughout his career. Dr. Beauchamp published over 80 articles in peer reviewed medical journals, including several book chapters. In 2007 he published his first book, Slaves to Medicine; in 2012, his daughters published his book of life values, entitled Pop Pop’s Rules. His research includes performance measures applied to medical outcomes. He approached every problem with great curiosity and intellect, choosing always to work to get from ‘curious’ to ‘grateful’ in every endeavor. Above all, George was a kind and gentle man: a doctor, author, medical philosopher, teacher, mentor, husband, father and wonderful “pop pop”. He was universally loved by children young and old. He adored his family and spending idyllic time with them at the summer home he designed on Long Pond Lake in the woods of Maine. George was also a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs, an aficionado of chocolate, a frequent adopter of animals, a teller of groan-worthy jokes, and giver of the warmest handshake or hug. His unfailing optimism and joy of life were gifts to all who knew him. He is survived by his loving and loyal wife of almost 50 years, Suzanne Chelborg Beauchamp, his daughters: Christine Marie Beauchamp of New York, NY, and Dr. Cynthia Lais Beauchamp (Dirk Christian Fisher) of Dallas, Texas, his grandchildren: George Robert Beauchamp II (Christine’s son, whom she named in honor of her father), and Cynthia’s sons, Kyle Beauchamp Fisher, Chase Beauchamp Fisher, and Finnley Beauchamp Fisher, his sister, Anne Beauchamp Fahner (Tyrone Fahner) of Chicago, Illinois, as well as a beautiful community of extended family, colleagues, and friends. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Medical Intensive Care Unit of Medical City Dallas whose compassionate care for George in his last weeks will forever be gratefully remembered. George’s family intends to honor his lifetime and legacy at a later time. In lieu of flowers, they request that his memory be honored through donations in his name to the Children’s Eye Foundation, the charitable organization to which he dedicated over 30 years of his life with great passion and love (www.childrenseyefoundation.org). "Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"

I met dr beuchchamp when my son was about 8 yrs old my son had many eye issues and I was a single parent it was hard for me to accept my son needed surgery and I just felt so much confusion but our experience was amazing . Thr dr was so calming and understanding . My son continued to see him for his remaining youth years and my son remembers him all the time till this day he says MY Dr Saved his eye and if he could see him as an adult he would everyrime he has eye issues he always asked me could he go see his doctor .. Dr beuchchamp remembered his patients even if some years passed. I Remeber one time my son got in trouble and was sent to the dallas juvenile center and my son was having eye issues with pain I called the grapevine office and they allowed my son to come thru a back door with a supervisor rom the detention center present and was seen by one of the Drs. You touched our hearts like I know you touched many other families hearts .. Many many years later my sister Maria and my niece Valerie were hired to work in your dallas office and to me that all seemed like s sign from God that you are just an amazing person … We will all miss you and thank you once again for that big comforting hug you gave me that one day and everytime after you always made me feel so much better …
George remains one of the very finest men I have had the privilege to know. The consummate gentleman and professional he served as the proper example of what every physician should strive to become. Every patient ever referred to his (and Cynthia’s) practice received the best of care and were so grateful. As fate would have it, my own grandson developed esotropia and George used his skill to correct the condition. While words cannot express how much he is missed, I have no doubts he is leading a chorus in Paradise. We will meet again!

I came to know George Beauchamp in the last ten years, the latter part of his career and mid-way through mine. He was always gracious, kind and encouraging, willing to help out and at the same time share his wisdom. We will miss his discourses at our CME conferences, his ready smile and dry wit.Cindy and Beauchamp family, my condolences to you all on your loss and you should be proud to know that he left a lasting impact on his colleagues and community. God Bless.
Dear Cynthia & family,
my sincere condolences go out to you. I admired Dr. Beauchamp & could listen to him speak on any topic!
He will be greatly missed – a tremendous loss to our community.
My thoughts & prayers are with you at this time.
George will be severely missed. We all loved his infectious , upbeat optimism. I first met him when he was a resident at Walter Reed and I was a fellow with Parks. We all had the utmost respect for our ophthalmology colleague Dr.George Beauchamp
Dr. Beauchamp was one of the most inspirational people and mentors I ever had the pleasure of working with. His enthusiasm, humor, and grace with patients, in teaching, and in the OR are a large part of the reason we all love what we do. His passing is a true loss to the profession, and to his family and friends. His legacy, and honor, at least for me, will carry a special place always. My sincerest condolences and prayers to all of his friends and family.
The short time I had the privilege of working with George was enough to get a glimpse of the caring surgeon, husband, father and grandfather that he was. It was always a joy to work with him. He has left a wonderful legacy for all who knew him. You will be missed George.
Dear Cynthia and family,
Almost 2 weeks since I received the news about George passing and I think of him often. The brief time I had the privilege of working with him allowed me to see what a caring surgeon, husband, father, grandfather and friend he was. I have a soft spot for a conversation we once had on the topic of our daughter Charlotte’s name before she was born. We hadn’t yet decided 100% on her name and when I told George that we really like Charlotte he got a big smile on his face and said, “Now her daddy will have to sing her to sleep with Hush hush sweet Charlotte” and we found the song on iTunes and I downloaded it and every time I listen to the song I think of George. What a great man. He leaves a tremendous legacy behind. My sincere condolences Cynthia and to all the family.
We are so saddened to hear the news of Dr. George Beauchamp passing. He will forever be one of the finest examples of a gentleman and skilled physician my son will ever meet. We have yet to tell our son about his passing as Jack has talked about becoming an eye surgeon because of what this wonderful man did for him. We met Dr. Beauchamp 10 years ago when Jack was 5 years old. We had the pleasure of staying hello and visiting with him at our last annual visit. It was such a pleasure to see him in the office. We quote him often as once said “if we could bottle what Jack is made of, we’d all be very wealthy.” He gave all the credit to our son for turning his vision around so quickly. Dr. Beuachamp was so compassionate and had such a gentle demeanor. He made sure he looked you straight in the eye and smiled with each gentle handshake. He made Jack fell as if he was the most important person in the room… and I loved how he referred to us and “mom and dad” to Jack during visits. We are grateful to have known him. Our condolences to Cynthia and the extended family. You are all in our prayers.
Dear Mrs. Beauchamp and Family,
With sincere sadness, I have just now learned of Dr. Beauchamp’s passing. I worked with him for several years and he has never left my heart or mind. His limitless love for his profession, unaltered kindness and unlimited patience for all who worked with him. Personally, he worked “with me”, never “over me”, even though he was one of my superiors. He always made time to teach me what I needed to know to provide his patients with the best results I could offer.
He is truly missed.
I was saddened to hear of Dr. Beauchamp’s passing. I worked with him at IMS – Kinetra years ago. He was the most gentle man – Always a twinkle in his eye with nice words and humor for everyone. What a lovely man. My condolences to his family. What a blessing he was.
