Broussard, Garnell
Obituary
Garnell Broussard, age 100, passed away peacefully at home on March 12, 2019. Garnell was born in Greenville, Tx on Dec 1, 1918. Losing her mother at age 8, she was raised under the watchful eyes of her father and caring aunts. At 13, she was blessed with a loving stepmother and later two younger brothers. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1937, a proud charter member of the Flaming Flashes drill team. Garnell led a remarkable and enviable life. She amassed a legion of faithful friends and colleagues living and working in Dallas, New Orleans, and Austin. Garnell traveled extensively across Europe and the United States, avidly followed all sports, and delighted her family with humorous tales and amazingly detailed anecdotes into her hundredth year. Garnell was preceded in death by her parents, Garnett and Nelly Dulaney Smith, husband Johnny C. Broussard, brother Dale Smith, stepmother Pearlie Smith, and beloved cousin, Jerry Plummer. She is survived by daughters Susanne Broussard of Dallas and Belinda Thomson (Sam) of Baton Rouge; brothers Fred Smith (Sandra) and Harold Smith (Martha) and their families. Garnell treasured her many relatives, young and old, with particular affection for the extended Hill and Chandler families. Her family is grateful to Dr. Minal Barve and her caring staff at Texas Oncology-Presbyterian who treated “Garnie” with both tenderness and good humor. Donations may be made in Garnell’s name to Mary Crowley Cancer Research at www.marycrowley.org.
A memorial gathering is planned for the early summer.
