Duke, George Winston

October 1, 1941 - August 29, 2019

Coach George Winston Duke passed away to join his beloved Lord in Heaven on August 29, 2019. He was born in Hope, Arkansas, one of six brothers and two sister, on October 1, 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Joyce Duke of Hope, Arkansas; brothers Jesse Duke, Bruce Duke, and Gerald Duke all of Hope, Arkansas; sisters Cornelia Duke of Stamps, Arkansas, and Peggy Duke Burson of Farmerville, Louisiana.  Coach Duke is survived by his wife of 57 years, Tonna Taylor Duke of Richardson, Texas; daughter, Dee Ann Hirsch and her husband Chuck Hirsch, and grandson Cole Hirsch of Arlington, Texas; brothers Joe Duke of Hope, Arkansas, Johnny Duke and his wife Linda of Jacksonville, Arkansas; and his faithful companion, Bella.  The relationships formed with his sister and brother-in-law Carol and Chuck Brown of Springfield, MO; and sister-in-law, Judy Duke of Hope Arkansas were very special to Coach Duke.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richardson, and he enjoyed participating in the Ed Albers Sunday School Class with long-time friends, The Goldenaires, Senior Adult Choir, and attending the worship services of FBCR. Coach Duke is much loved and respected by hundreds of athletes and students who benefited from his example, mentoring, and coaching, not just in sports, but also in life skills.  He loved his calling as a coach and leader to countless young men and women. His successful teams and throwers won many games and accolades due to his diligence and dedication to the leaders of tomorrow. The accomplishments in his career were many and appreciated, but he felt the success in life of these same athletes were his greatest honor.

Coach Duke was especially proud of the accomplishments of his daughter, Dee Ann. She is strong, wise, motivated and loved.  He enjoyed working and relaxing at his small farm in Emmet, Arkansas and spending time with his nephews and nieces including, David and Carol Duke of Hope, Arkansas, Madison and Ryleigh Hand of Richardson, Texas, and many others.  Coach Duke was an example of a good Christian man and will be missed by the thousands he touched in his 77 years of service to others.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am in the Worship Center of The First Baptist Church, 1001 N. Central Expressway,  Richardson, Texas 75080 on September 13, 2019.
