Garner, Glendon W.
Obituary
Glendon W. “Glen” Garner died peacefully in his sleep after a brave and difficult two year battle against cancer. He was doing pull ups in bed with a Hospice Volunteer when he fell asleep, and died in his sleep about 12 hours later, still trying until the end. Glen was a wonderful, good, active, strong, humble, modest and interesting man who lived 85 good years. He was born 16 Nov 1927 in Croak, AR and died on 30 May 2013 in Dallas, Texas. After serving in the US Navy at the end of World War II, he had a long engineering career with Channel 11 in Dallas-Fort Worth as an early pioneer in television broadcasting. He broadcast the first color television network broadcast and was the engineer for John F. Kennedy’s last speech in Fort Worth, TX. Following his first retirement, he had a second retirement at age 80 from Eastfield College in Mesquite, Texas and enjoyed being around young people there. He continued doing volunteer work until his cancer surgery in 2011. Glen was a World War II buff and enjoyed his trips retracing the European battles, as well as his many trips in the United States. An avid reader, his last books were read on his Kindle. He was a member of the Dallas Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. A long-time precinct chairman, and former city councilman of Pantego, TX (where Garner Blvd. is named for him), he was always interested in politics and current events until the last few weeks of his life. He loved music and until his declining health sang with his church choir and enjoyed playing guitar and singing with his church First Friday Folksingers. Glen was preceded by his parents, William McTerral and Florence (Burford) Garner of Kingsland, AR and his four sisters, Elsie Steffens, Dorine Reaves, Esther Irvin and Elizabeth Freer. He is survived by his only living brother-in-law, J. C. “Junior” Freer, his first wife, Kathryn White Garner, his loving second wife of 35 years, Hallie Price Garner, his birth children Steven William (Plano, TX) and Gail Marie Garner (Jim) Marlatt (Noble, OK), as well as devoted step children Kent (Betty) (Danbury, CT) and John Kendall (ex-wife Tracy) (Dallas, TX). He is also survived by four grandchildren, Stacey and Paul Garner, and Victoria and Emily Marlatt and three step-grandchildren, Kortney Kendall, Kayla LaRoque, and Luis Patrick Kendall. Glen had many loving friends, and especially appreciated the constant care and concern of special friends, Joe and Nancy Barlow, Bob Bliss, Suzy Nicholson, Joan Howell, Nutticha Roongs, Fred Penn, Mina Daffinee, and the members of his church, CUUC of Plano, as well as the his devoted inlaws, Pattie and Jerry Loveday, Lester and Sara Price, and Larry and Pat Price, special niece Jennifer Loveday, all of Knoxville, TN., as well as many other beloved nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He also appreciated the loving support Hallie’s many friends gave her during his long illness, and the doctors and staff at UTSW Medical School, and Dr. Neal Sklaver and his staff.
