Harry Dale Parkhill

Harry Dale Parkhill, beloved father, step-father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away Friday, April 1, 2022. He was born July 21, 1934 to Earl and Grace Parkhill in Christopher, Illinois. The family soon moved to Benton, Illinois, where Harry attended all 12 years of school. He was a 1952 graduate of Benton Consolidated High School.

As a student at Southern Illinois University, Harry enlisted in the US Navy. He spent most of his service years assigned to the USS Jason, a repair ship based out of California. His tours of duty took him to Japan twice.

After naval service Harry spent 53 years in the insurance industry. His focus was on the “Property and Casualty” side of the industry, starting his career as a claims adjuster and finishing his career supervising catastrophe offices for major environmental catastrophes. Harry tracked hurricanes and large weather systems before leaving to help those whose homes and businesses were damaged.

While Harry enjoyed his insurance career, his true passion was re-engineering everyday items. And often he could be found tinkering in his workshop, as he enjoyed working with his hands. He was always ready to help family and friends with building projects.

Harry is survived by his sister, Ruth Penrod, of Houston, Texas; his son, Michael Parkhill and wife Faye of Arlington, Texas; daughter Nancy Parkhill Taylor and husband Jim of Gordon, Texas; step-daughters Debbie Viers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Diana Clarke and husband Tim of Watauga, Texas. There are also eighteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and a newborn great-great-grandson.

Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Parkhill, and step-daughters, Dawnna Englund and Darien Creese, his parents and older brother, Gene Parkhill, and brother-in-law, Van Penrod; Nephews Dennis Parkhill and John Penrod.
