Obituary
THE REV. ERIC NOLAN SCHULZE
Pastor Eric Nolan Schulze of Hurst died peacefully in his home on Monday, August 8, 2016. He was born November 4, 1934, in Bryan, Texas, the son of Nolan and Margaret Schulze. At a youth leadership school in 1950, he began considering the pastoral ministry as a vocation. He graduated as salutatorian from San Marcos High School at the age of 16. In 1955, he received his BA degree from Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas; and in 1959, he received his M. Div. degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA. He pursued additional graduate study at the University of Erlangen, Germany in 1959-60; and at Rice University, Houston, TX in 1960-61. Pastor Schulze was ordained on June 25, 1961. He accepted the call to start a new congregation, Atonement Lutheran Church, on the west side of San Antonio, TX, which grew to 590 members in eight years. While there he helped establish the Lackland Area Ministerial Association and the Valley Hi Optimist Club. In April 1969 he accepted the call to become pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, Richland Hills, TX. “Pastor Eric” served there until his retirement in January, 2004. During this time, Calvary thrived and had three building programs. He served several years as a member and chairman of the North East Emergency Distribution Board of Directors; member and chairman of the Board of Directors of Briarwood Lutheran Retreat Center; and member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Lutheran University Alumni Association. He was active in Via de Cristo of North Texas, serving as spiritual director numerous times and as a member of the Secretariat. Pastor Schulze also enjoyed leading Calvary’s Stephen Ministry program; mentoring a number of pastoral interns through the years; and organizing and leading wonderful tours for church members to Germany, Italy and Greece. He loved camping, the mountains, traveling, sports (especially the Texas Rangers), and music (opera and symphony). He was passionate about his children, grandchildren and his Calvary congregation. Pastor Eric is survived by his three caring children, Eric Nolan Schulze, Jr., and his wife Frankie of Lakewood, CO, Kari Laraine Brandenburg and her husband Jonathan of Addison, TX, and Kristen Marie Flabiano and her husband, Darin of Dallas, TX; two adoring grandchildren, Christopher Charles Flabiano and Chloe Marie Flabiano; two loving sisters, Dorothea (Dorry) Shaddock and her husband Carroll of Houston, Texas, and Mary Neuendorf and her husband Klaus of Salem, Oregon; sister-in-law Raquel Schulze, wife of his late brother John of Austin, TX; four nephews, Christoph John Neuendorf, Christian Shaddock, Peter Eric Shaddock and Matthew Nolan Shaddock; niece Renate Neuendorf; former wife, mother of his children, close friend and confidant, Gail Grundman; and the greatest group of friends anyone could ask for within the Calvary congregation. Memorial Service 2pm Saturday, August 13th at Calvary Lutheran Church, 7620 Baker Blvd, Richland Hills, TX 76118 The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Briarwood Retreat Center, 670 Copper Canyon Rd., Argyle, TX 76226, or online at www.briarwoodretreat.org/#!ways-to-give. "Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"

Pastor Eric was very special. We attended Atonement in 1966 and the next morning he was at our door step. He and Gail recently visited Atonement but I was not there. He had a large impact on a lot of lives. Prays are with the family.
What a life well lived. Thank you for your service to Calvary Lutheran these many years. Go in Peace and serve our Lord!!
I came to know Pastor Eric late in his life and found a man who lived his faith. He led the Senior Group at Calvary in games, fellowship, meals and sight seeing around the area. always faithful, even when it meant coming to church in his wheelchair when his health was in jeopardy. Would that I could be so..
Remembering the first Sunday he and family was at Calvary with a down pour rainstorm and the mud at the door. He confirmed and married both of our children and has been such a blessing to our family in more ways than we can ever repeat. Our loss is felt but so blessed to know he is at rest and peace.
Pastor Schulze confirmed me @ Atonement shortly after we arrival as “military transplants” from a remote Montana airbase, where “church”, & “religion” were pretty much limited to military chapel services & an overworked, rather generic “chaplain of the month”. Thats when 1)I met a ball of fire 2)who confirmed me at age 14/15, 3)convinced my parents to 4)send me to TLC, 4)from where my calling lead to med school in Mexico, 5)to serve God’s people. Never got to thank him. Espero que descansas en Paz de nuestro Dios, Eric! Gracias. Tommy Kusiak
A simply outstanding person. I am saddened to hear of Pastor Eric’s passing, but remain comforted in the knowledge that he is at rest and with the Lord. I’ll never forget his wit, compassion, and directness about all things. His impact in my life and the lives of our family lives on in the legacy and future of Calvary Lutheran Church.
My love and prayers go out to his family and all who miss him with me.
