Obituary

Layne Rylander left this earth on September 29, 2019 from complications of severe chronic pain as a result of a car accident and surgery.  She was born on August 5, 1987 to Carole and Dale Rylander in Dallas, Texas.  While she lived in Dallas her entire life, she was a citizen of the world – as a Rotary Exchange student to France and traveling to 22 countries.  Layne reveled in experiencing different perspectives and cultures and was fluent in French and Spanish.  She lived to create connections with everyone she met. Layne attended Lake Highlands High School where she played French horn in the marching band and was on the women’s varsity basketball team.  She graduated high school in three years to spend a year in France.  At Austin College she double majored in Communications/Theater and French with a minor in Global Science, Technology and Society.  She was a member of Sigma Phi Chi, Alpha Psi Omega, the theater honors fraternity, as well as Phi Beta Kappa.  She graduated Summa Cum Laude. A lifelong Presbyterian, Layne grew up in NorthPark Church participating in many mission trips, camps, conferences and youth group activities.  She served the greater Church as an Austin College Activator. Layne was passionate about people, Milo (her dog), theater, travel, the “Friends” TV show, Texas 42, board games – especially Clue, and wearing obviously different socks.  She tutored differential equations at UTD and worked in insurance, accounting, business management and hospitality. A charming, brilliant and loving person, Layne’s enthusiasm was contagious.  She was fun, engaging and made sure anyone around her never had a dull moment.  She never met a stranger and created community wherever she was.  Layne was a gifted communicator who wrote beautiful and powerful poetry.  Regardless of what life threw at her, she was always optimistic.  Her strength of character allowed her to remain positive despite two years of chronic pain. Layne is survived by her parents; her siblings, Dean Rylander (and wife Melanie) and Risa Rylander (and husband Mark); grandmothers, Doris Gene Johnson and Betty Rylander; four aunts, uncle and two cousins. A memorial service to celebrate Layne’s life will be held on October 5th at 10:00am at NorthPark Presbyterian Church in Dallas.  We invite you to bring your favorite story about her to create a book of remembrances.  In lieu of flowers, please remember Layne with a donation to the Theatre Department at Austin College, 900 North Grand Avenue, Sherman, Texas 75090 or by going online to www.austincollege.edu/giving.

I’m so sorry to learn of Layne’s loss. I first met Carole only weeks before Layne’s arrival; I shared your family’s joy at the arrival of a first daughter. I’m so sorry to hear that Layne struggled with chronic pain for so long. I hope all of you will find peace in your memories of Layne, and comfort in each other and all of us in your global community who stand with you in this hard time. My love goes out to all of you.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
