Obituary

Charles Bryan Valliant, of Dallas, TX was born on December 26, 1924 and passed from this earthly life on June 9, 2019. He was 94 years of age at his passing, the termination of a gracious, loving and faithful life. Charles lived a life dedicated to his family, his church and his country.

Born in the west Texas town of Barstow, he served his country in World War II. He was stationed in Honolulu as part of the Mid-Pacific Command during World War II, beginning in 1943 and was honorably discharged three years later, having achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant.

He returned to west Texas from Ft. Shafter and was enrolled at Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University). He was graduated with honors in 1950, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree and an MBA from Pepperdine University in 1973. Charles embarked on his career as an engineer first designing cotton gins, then working in the oil and gas industry. In 1956, he joined Peerless Manufacturing Company in Dallas as Chief Engineer, developing a vapor-liquid separation system. And was later promoted to Executive VP and COO. Charles continued overseeing engineering research and development, and engineering sales, until his retirement in 1979, a career spanning almost 30 years.

His work at Peerless required Charles to travel all over the world. His love of history was brought alive through his travels to Europe and Asia. A little camera he received as a gift when he was nine sparked an interest in photography, which he put to good use in his travels. Charles enjoyed writing anything from technical manuals to family stories and his own memoirs, which he intertwined with his genealogical research. When he was only five, he developed a love for music of all kinds, which brought him joy throughout his life.

While his career was his livelihood, his life was his family. He married Sue Boxley, a childhood friend, on June 7, 1947. Together they provided a loving and supportive home for their children. Charles and Sue, and their children were active members of First Baptist Church in Richardson, having joined in 1957.

Charles and Sue were married 46 years before she passed away in 1993. They had three children: Kenneth Charles Valliant (married to Audrianne, with son, Charles), Karen Valliant Burns (married to Dwight Burns, with son, Everett), and Robert Paul Valliant (then married to Holly, with children, Hannah, Miles and Annie).

In 1996, after Sue’s death, Charles married Bonnie Sample, whom he met in the Cliff Hangers Sunday School class, and they remained together until Charles’ passing, a union of 23 years. Charles said of Bonnie that she “added immeasurably to his life.”

Charles’ life was and is much more than a chronology of accomplishments. Charles was a Christian son, loving father, faithful husband, and Sunday School teacher. He was a businessman and executive, dedicated worshipper, an avid Cowboys/Rangers/Mavericks fan, a terrific grandfather, a soldier, a leader and a fine example for his kids and grandkids. He easily developed and cultivated friendships wherever he was.

In his most recent years, Charles continued to enjoy music, friendships and family. He was a friend to all, but overall, he was simply a caring man. In his memoir, Charles summed up his life by saying, “I truly have been blessed beyond measure.”

During his final months, Charles was lovingly cared for by the very special ladies of The Family’s Choice: Joy Mmbifwa, with Jane, Chella and Patricia. The family would also like to thank care providers Irene Karuga, and Sister Demetria who helped usher Charles heavenward during his final weeks.

    Karen and all:
It is just so wonderful to think back on all the wonderful times with Mr. Valliant. I will be forever indebted to him for letting me go with he and Karen on the best trip of my life to England and France. He was such a gentleman, courteous and thoughtful. His guidance through all the travel was so huge and his love of history was so immense. He and I shared that love and bonded over that and our love of genealogy and west Texas. I have missed him through all his years of illness. But I rejoice for his homegoing to be in eternal love and peace with our Father. Karen, Bob, Ken and all, I loved your dad too.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
