White, Larry P.
Obituary
Larry Paul White, 74, joined his Lord and Savior on October 21, 2020. A long-time resident of Dallas, Larry graduated from Bryan Adams High School in 1964 and the University of Texas at Arlington in 1971. Larry began playing the pedal steel guitar in 1962. As a young man he worked the road and the Opry with Grand Ole Opry stars Roy Drusky, Ferlin Husky and Bob Lumen. After a several-year stint on the road, he returned to Dallas but continued to play full time with local bands and acts. With the passing years he broadened his musical approach to steel guitar by getting a variety of opportunities with Dallas jingle producers and local bands that were musically broader than country, which eventually led to him being made a “Texas Tornado” by Buddy Magazine. UNT provided a wealth of players willing to experiment with original music that lead to local successes with bands like HiRise and Recoil. Along the way he managed to co-build and own two small recording studios: ClearLight studio with local musical hero Ronnie Dawson and his group Steel Rail Blues and a continuation of ClearLight in a new location with bass player/producer Bob Gentry. Larry was a pioneer of effect processing for steel guitar and a veteran of 15 years of music retail with Dan Haubrich Music and Brook Mays Music as well. Playing on several of harpist Cindy Horstman’s albums with producer Mike Medina allowed him to continue to “put pedal steel guitar in places you wouldn’t expect to find it.” Larry was born on September 2, 1946, and was preceded in death by his parents, Lu and Paul White. He is survived by cousins Saundra Heffington of Carrollton, Judy Ducate of Plano and Vicki LaVassaur of Clearwater, Florida, as well as many other friends and family who loved him dearly.

Larry was a great witness for Christ Jesus. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Larry was such a great friend to Maurice and I for many years. After I lost Maurice to the Lord Larry was more like my big brother. I loved Him so very much. Larry also played many jobs with me on my band. Such a gifted musician! RIP my love.
God bless you my friend.I will always remember our time together.Love you!
Larry was a true musical innovator and a sweetheat of a person. Always a fountain on information and funny stories. He was an inspiration for so many and a friend. He will be missed.
Larry White was my father’s dear friend and fellow musician. I had the honor to meet him on a number of occasions, and he treated me like his own son. His dedication and skill as a musician were above reproach. It is my hope that the community of listeners will become aware of Larry’s immense contributions on steel and bass, and I hope to share his music with as many as I can.
Michael & I meet Larry in 1974 and January Music & Sound he became a great friend for the rest of the time we had together recording more music. Larry always had time for you just to talk and play music. Michael and I will never forget him and will always miss him. He left a great catalog of music and it will always live on. Thank You Larry for all the laughs and R.I.P My Brother
I had the privilege of playing in a church orchestra with Larry for many years. Not only was he a good musician, he as also a good man. One of the best.
Larry is the kindest, loving, most generous, peaceful soul I’ve ever know. Playing music with Larry was like dancing in the ether. His pedal steel guitar sang with the lure of the sirens. One would try to borrow time for just one more song one more time. Take a drink!
I loved Larry, though I knew him as Dogfoot. At first, I only knew him as the best pedal steel guitarist in my world. He played on all 4 of my CDs. Then I got to know him as a very decent human being and that is the best compliment that can be awarded someone. Dogfoot, you were one hell of a decent human and I am so saddened by your death. I will always remember you and your beautiful pedal steel on Treasures and Lone Star Depression will live forever in my memory.
So sorry to hear of Larry’s death. It was a true honor to know him and have him play on our cds . Such a great talent and a wonderful soul. We will miss him, but we are grateful for the music he has left us as well as sweet memories. Prayers for Larry and his family and friends.
My Dear Larry,
I have been trying to find out how you were for a couple weeks now. I finally found you and was devastated to see you had left us! I know your in a better place now but God I will miss you! We worked together on the most beautiful music I have ever done. I will be doing a tribute to you in song on You Tube soon. You and your beautiful soul and music will always be a part of my life. God Bless you and keep you always in his arms! Rita Marlayne

I was shocked to hear of Larry’s death. He was a Latin student of my mother’s at Bryan Adams High School in Dallas in the early 1969s, co-counsel if the Latin Club in 1963-64, and my friend. Larry was so bright and funny! He will be missed! I will inform the Bryan Adams Adams High School Alumni Association, if they are not yet aware of his passing.
