Woodbury, Fern Stoddard
Obituary
Fern Stoddard Woodbury of Dallas, Texas died early Thursday morning, May 7th, 2020 in Parker, Colorado. She celebrated her 91st birthday two weeks prior. Funeral services are scheduled for June 6th at 11:00 AM at 900 S. Bowser Road in Richardson, Texas, with interment at the Restland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Fern was born April 21, 1929 in Bancroft, Idaho, the youngest child of Ira (Bud) Stoddard and Opal Coumerilh Stoddard. She grew up on the family ranch where she learned to work hard. She excelled at both horseback riding and scholarship and graduated as the valedictorian of her class at North Gem High School. She received an Associates degree from Weber College in Ogden, Utah and a Bachelors Degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She taught elementary school for a brief period before she met Frank Woodbury. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1952, and shortly thereafter made their way east, settling near Cleveland, Ohio for nearly 20 years. In 1972 Fern and Frank relocated their family to Dallas, Texas, where she continued to raise her family and serve in the community for the next 45 years. Fern was a loving and committed mother and experienced great joy in rearing her seven children. Her devotion to her husband, Frank, was evident to all who observed their interactions, and they enjoyed an exceptional partnership of love, service, and music. Fern was an accomplished pianist and teacher, instilling in her children and grandchildren a love for music and an interest in developing and sharing their musical talents. Fern was a committed disciple of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in many capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including missionary service with her husband Frank in England and in Connecticut, and three decades of service in the Dallas, Texas Temple. Though grieved at the loss of her sweetheart in 2001 and her oldest daughter in 2003, she continued her life of service to her growing posterity for the next 18 years, and continued to increase her circle of friends to love and care for. As her health began to decline in 2017, she left her home in Texas to be with her children in Kentucky, North Carolina, and Colorado. She spent her final year in Colorado where many of her posterity had the privilege of visiting and being with her. Fern was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother Martha Rickman; her brothers and sisters – Barbara Rose, Donna Wartena, Hugh (or Jack), Robert, and Betty; her step-brothers Raleigh and Robert Scott; her husband Frank; and her daughter Cosette (Charles) Andrews. She is survived by six children – Matthew Woodbury of Dallas, TX; Paul (Katy) Woodbury of Parker, CO; Michael (Sandy) Woodbury of Aubrey, TX; David (Roxanne) Woodbury of Crestwood, KY; Mark (Rebecca) Woodbury of Morrisville, NC; and Barbara (Rick) Putnam of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia), 35 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

I was so sorry to hear of Fern’s passing, but I know her reunion with her husband and daughter was a joyous one! I will always remember her as my VERY patient piano teacher…always smiling, happy, kind, and serving others. Much love, The Whitworth Family
Fern has one of the warmest, genuine smiles you will ever see, and always made me smile and feel loved whenever I saw her. I am well pleased to be part of her extended family, and will always look up to, and admire her. I’m thankful for her inspiring example, and hopeful to see her and Frank; along with Cosette someday.
We pay our respects to the Woodburys. We have lived here about the same years that they have, except that we were here two years before they arrived. Our children had such great love and respect for all of them. Gratefuly to be able to be here to hear the funeral services.
My sympathies to the family at the loss of this beautiful and sweet woman. She will always be remembered.

Fern and frank served my daughter in the nursery at church. They used music to teach the gospel to those little children. Later Fern taught Sunday school to my other daughter. What a blessing to have such a devoted instructor. I joined Fern at water aerobics. When we carpooled together we had time to discuss current events and rearing children. One of my highlights with Fern was attending a concert in Fort Worth of Amanda Woodbury. Fern was so proud of her family. “It’s so nice to see you,” and “I’m so happy to be acquainted with you and your family,” were compliments from Fern given often. Gregg and I feel blessed to have known Fern.
I loved Fern! I was blessed with the opportunity to help care for her the last time she lived with Rebecca and Mark in Morrisville, NC. She was a determined woman who endured to the end! She made me want to be a better person. She was truly an inspiration! We read
the scriptures daily and other uplifting books. She loved looking at her family albums and studying her list of family members as she realized it was hard to remember everyone’s names.
She liked to exercise! She loved to walk and when she got started, she could walk better than around the block. If the weather didn’t permit her walk around the block, she would walk the second floor or we would do chair yoga! She would say she didn’t watch tv but if she ever sat down in front of it, she enjoyed When Calls the Heart.
When Rebecca and Mark we’re out, she loved when they returned and came to her room and shared what they had done that evening and had prayer. She really enjoyed it when Mark would sing to her. She loved to listen to him sing.
I kept a journal of our daily activities. She enjoyed our outings! Often it was to the Chiropractoic but the highlight was a hamburger for lunch! Often she would remark how much she enjoyed Mark taking her to get a hamburger!
She loved her family and looked forward to their calls! Frank was never to far from her thoughts. She missed him so much! When I heard she had passed away, my first thought was now she’s with Frank! She was such a beautiful person inside and out! I’m so grateful I can call her my friend! I am a better person having known her!
